Toad on a toadstool

Toad on a toadstool

My two grandchildren, 11 and 13, went walking in their backyard and found different sorts of mushrooms. David, my grandson, had a simple camera and took a lot of interesting photos while his little sister hunted for more. Cara, the 11 year old caught a toad, and after numerous tries, placed it on a big mushroom so that David could get the title picture! I had so much fun watching them!

Yes, aren't kids creative? With all the stuff one hears from some people about kids not getting outside and doing things......... I have found that going WITH them and taking the time from our own hectic lives affords us all the ability to find creativity together!

Isn't it unusual for children to enjoy nature these days? With their world full of video games and technology it's a wonder that your grandchildren are able to appreciate the simple things in life. You must be a wonderful grandmother!

This is so cute! I love the thought of you sitting there watching your grandchildren explore their environment. We often lose that sense of wonder as adults, so watching those kids experience it must have been a real treat.

This reminds me of a recent experience I had with my 5 year old nephew. Knowing I like mushrooms, he lead me onto a path near his family's property, showed me a mushroom he had found, and asked me what kind it was.

I could tell it was an Amanita of some sort, and I was both proud and slightly nervous of his curiosity. I informed him that it was an Amanita and that he should never eat it. He gravely informed me that he never would, and then went running back to the rest of our family screaming "She says it's an amanita!" at the top of his lungs. His enthusiasm greatly amused me.

Thanks for writing, Jane, and keep having fun with your grandkids in the woods!
